(Let's take a walk down memory lane...)

I sat in the driver’s seat staring into the rearview mirror at her.

She was wagging her tail, happy to be back with me (and probably wondering why we weren’t driving away).

I wished I could share her enthusiasm, but I was heartbroken and in total shock.

I knew it was her, but… It wasn’t.

Just 3 hours earlier, Chloe was dropped off at the groomer looking like a big cuddly teddy bear (a seriously shaggy one, but a teddy bear, no less).

And now?

She looked like…

…a giant…

rat.

In the YEARS before I finally mastered the care of Chloe’s coat, I tried all sorts of products - anything and everything that had even a slight promise of handling and managing it.

I became particularly obsessed with brushes - I tried brush, after brush…after brush.

I built up an entire collection of dog coat care products worthy of a king.

I also convinced myself that I was brushing Chloe as often as I could (which sometimes meant only a few times a month), but obviously, there was something I just wasn’t getting.

I guess you could say that I eventually just gave up and started to accept:

That visits to the groomer meant Chloe was getting another “relieving summer cut” (even in the dead of winter)...
That Chloe was "cuter" this way…
And that this was "more convenient" for us, anyway.

Maybe you can relate.

It wasn’t until after I started a blog years later that I changed my mind about all that.

I saw how other Doodle parents took pride in their coat care efforts, and I wanted that pride.

I didn’t want to give excuses anymore about why she didn’t look like a “Doodle”.

So, I decided to take back my power and went down a rabbit hole of all things Doodle grooming and coat care.

It was that if you’re doing it ALL WRONG, nothing...

...not even the best, most expensive dog brush on the face of the earth...

...will stop a groomer from doing what’s best for their four-legged clients…which most times means:

SHAVING.

I also discovered that thousands of other Doodle parents were having the same problem...

Apparently, how to properly groom and care for a Doodle’s coat was NOT common knowledge.

I needed to change that.

So, I started documenting my research and DIY grooming attempts on a blog, which eventually turned into what is now a full-fledged company called Doodle Doods.

The truth is that Doodle upkeep can be A LOT more than you bargained for...

So, even though now I like to joke that that first shave down is like a "rite of passage" for Doodle parents...

(A sort of "fool me once, shame on me" situation...)

...I’ll never forget the devastation I felt that day...

And I have the utmost empathy for new Doodle parents who have to experience for themselves the shock of picking up a completely shaven Doodle.
