Disclosure: In partnership with Merck Animal Health, stay tuned for advice on keeping your Doodle protected and comfortable in the warmer months.

Summer is just around the corner, and as a proud parent of a Doodle, you know the importance of preparing for the season of heat and outdoor adventures. (If you know, you know 😉 ) That is to say that our lovable, fluffy pups come with some unique care requirements. So, whether you’re planning days at the beach, camping trips, or even just some nice weekend hikes, here are nine essential tips to ensure your Doodle enjoys a safe and comfortable summer.

1. Stay Hydrated Out There

First and foremost, keeping your Doodle hydrated is crucial during the warmer months. Always carry a portable water bottle during walks or outings to ensure your dog can drink whenever necessary. Dehydration in dogs can happen quickly and can be severe, so frequent water breaks are a must, especially after playtime or exercise.

2. Rock a Summer Haircut

Consider scheduling a summer haircut for your Doodle. Not only does this help them stay cool, but it also simplifies the process of checking for fleas, ticks, and any skin issues that might be hidden under a thicker coat. A shorter cut means less matting and easier maintenance—a win for both you and your pup!

Tip: Outdoor adventures can often pick up unwanted hitchhikers. If your Dood finds themself covered in foxtails or another similar nuisance, dry cornstarch, and a metal comb will get them right out!

3. Visit the Vet for Flea and Tick Medication

While all dogs can get fleas, Doodles can be tricky when it comes to ticks and fleas. Due to their textured coats that are often very thick and curly, a Dood’s hair can hide ticks easier than a standard-coated dog. Their coat also makes it difficult to identify signs of fleas.

But fleas and ticks are more than just pests; they can transmit diseases that are harmful to your pet. We recommend visiting your veterinarian to discuss the best flea and tick protection. Consider using BRAVECTO® (fluralaner) Chews for a fast-acting, safe, and easy treatment that offers up to 12 weeks* of protection with just one chew. A single chew provides nearly 3X longer protection than a single dose of monthly products, making it a convenient and effective option for busy Doodle owners.

4. Check for Ticks

Speaking of ticks, knowing how to check for them is essential. Focus your search on warm, hidden areas like under the arms, around the ears, and near the tail.

5. Avoid Peak Temps and Direct Sunlight

Plan your outdoor activities wisely. Avoid the hottest parts of the day—typically from noon to 3 PM—when temperatures peak. Opt for early morning or late evening walks when it’s cooler. Always choose shaded trails over open sunlit areas, and watch for signs of heatstroke, which can include excessive panting, drooling, lethargy, and confusion.

6. Take Care of Those Paws

The summer heat can make pavements scorching hot. Protect your Doodle’s paws with dog booties to prevent burns and provide extra grip on rugged terrains. If booties aren’t an option, try to walk your dog on grass or shaded paths, and always test the pavement with your hand—if it’s too hot for you, it’s too hot for your dog’s paws.

7. Practice Leash and Recall Training

Summer increases the chances of encountering other people and pets, making reliable leash and recall training vital. Practice these commands regularly to ensure your Doodle responds well, especially in unfamiliar or crowded settings. This can prevent accidents and ensure both safety and fun during your outdoor adventures.

8. Have Proper Identification

Ensure your Doodle’s microchip information is up to date and that their collar tags are secure and readable. This simple check can be a lifesaver if your pet gets lost, providing a quick way for you to be reunited with your furry companion.

9. Help Them Stay Cool

In the summer heat, keeping your Doodle cool is essential. Use cooling mats to provide a comfortable spot for them to relax and regulate their body temperature. Additionally, a paddling pool in a shaded area can offer a fun way for them to cool down. Indoors, maintain a cool environment with air conditioning or fans, ensuring they have access to plenty of fresh water and a shady spot to retreat. These simple measures can significantly enhance your Doodle’s comfort and safety during the warmer months.

In partnership with Merck Animal Health, we hope these tips allow your Doodle to have a fun, safe, and cool summer. Always remember: preparation is key to preventing summer hazards, and keeping these points in mind will help you enjoy a wonderful season with your beloved Doodle. Happy summer!
