Bordoodles are highly intelligent so training and teaching them manners should be a breeze. However, dogs this intelligent need lots of mental and physical stimulation. Bordoodles enjoy an active lifestyle, but just as much, human affection. If this Doodle has stolen your heart, you’ve probably been wondering, what’s a Bordoodle’s size exactly?
Bordoodle Size Predictions: How Big Does a Bordoodle Grow?
For current and future dog owners, one of the most important things to know about a dog is their full-grown size. Adult Bordoodles weigh anywhere between 30 to 60 pounds, and stand at 12 to 22 inches tall from the withers. Bordoodles are generally considered medium sized dogs.
So how big is Bordoodle’s full-grown size? Here’s a typical Bordoodle size chart:
Mini / Medium Bordoodle | Standard Bordoodle
Weight | 30-45 pounds | 45-60 pounds |
Height* | 12-20 inches | 16-22 inches |
When Full-Grown? | 11-13 months | 13-18 months |
But how can you know in advance how big your Bordoodle will get? There’s no way to exactly predict how big a pup will get. However, there are several things that affect your pup’s size. For instance, male Bordoodles tend to grow a bit larger than female Bordoodles. Additionally, your pup’s parents’ and grandparents’ genes, and breed generation play a key role in their size.
Another important thing to note is that in order for your pup to grow into a healthy adult Bordoodle, a balanced and nutritious diet is an absolute must. Dogs go through rapid growth stages when becoming adults. Therefore, a nutritious diet will support your puppy’s proper development into an adult Bordoodle.
All puppies should be fed formulas specially designed for puppies. Puppy food formulas are usually more calorie-dense and provide additional nutrients necessary for their development. Check out these guides on best dog food for puppies here.
Additionally, your puppy’s energy requirements should be calculated based on their estimated adult size. Here you can learn everything about feeding your pup. You’ll also find a daily puppy feeding chart, which is a very handy tool for calculating your dog’s daily calorie needs.
Of course, let’s not forget that just like humans, dogs can over or undereat, too. That’s why it’s especially important that you know roughly how big your Bordoodle puppy will get. Obese or malnourished dogs are at a much higher risk of developing health issues. For instance, diabetes, heart disease, and joint problems.
Bordoodle Size Charts & Growth Patterns
Most dogs go through the most rapid phase of growth in their first 6 months. After that, their growth will slow down remarkably and plateau over the upcoming months. Depending on the pup’s size, they might reach their full-grown size at around 8-18 months of age. Smaller Doodles reach their full height and weight sooner. Larger Doodles might stop growing once they’re 18 months old.
To make this whole process a bit easier for all (future) Doodle owners, we have gathered data according to different sized dogs and their growth patterns. Be sure to try our Bordoodle size chart and growth calculator.
Speaking of, we’ve been collecting weight data from our Doodle Weight Prediction Calculator. The below Bordoodle size chart / graph shows the average weights by age (in weeks), per size of Bordoodle.
As of October 24, 2022, we’ve received over 3,400 accurate Bordoodle weight submissions through our calculator.
Mini Bordoodle
Mini aka Medium Bordoodles are usually a cross between a Border Collie or Bordoodle and a Miniature Poodle. As they are smaller than Standard Bordoodles, they will reach their adult size sooner.
Mini Bordoodles usually reach half their adult size around the time they’re 3.5-5 months old. At around 11-13 months of age, they have reached their adult weight. However, keep in mind that all dogs are unique and some might take slower and some or faster when reaching their full size.
Here’s a simple formula you can use to predict your Mini Bordoodle’s adult weight. Simply multiply your pup’s weight at 18 weeks old by two.
Standard Bordoodle Size Chart
Although most Standard Bordoodles do fall into the medium sized breed category, some pups have a naturally larger frame. As we now know, larger Standard Bordoodles will reach half of their adult weight later then Mini Bordoodles – typically, when they’re around 4.5-6 months old.
If you suspect that your Bordoodle pup is going to be on the larger end of the scale, you can try out a different weight prediction formula for larger dogs. For this, multiply your Bordoodle’s weight at 23 weeks by two.
F1 vs F1b vs F2b Bordoodle
We briefly touched on how different breed generations also play a role in determining a Doodle’s size. Let’s have a closer look at what each breed generation represents:
1st Parent | 2nd Parent | % Border Collie* | % Poodle*
F1 Bordoodle (first-generation) | Border Collie | Poodle | 50% | 50% |
F1B Bordoodle (first-generation backcross) | F1 Bordoodle | Poodle | 25% | 75% |
F1BB Bordoodle (first-generation backcross backcross) | F1B Bordoodle | Poodle | 12.5% | 87.5% |
F2 Bordoodle (second-generation) | F1 Bordoodle | F1 Bordoodle | 50% | 50% |
F2B Bordoodle (second-generation backcross) | F1 Bordoodle | F1B Bordoodle | 37.5% | 62.5% |
F2B Bordoodle (alternate cross) | F2 Bordoodle | Poodle | 25% | 75% |
F3 / Multigen Bordoodle | F1B Bordoodle or higher | F1B Bordoodle or higher | Varies | Varies |
As we can see, with different generations there’s a bigger possibility to predict your Bordoodle’s size once full-grown. For example, if a mini F1 Bordoodle and a Mini Poodle are crossed, we can expect the F1b Bordoodle to be a smaller dog. In contrast, an F1 Bordoodle that has a Border Collie parent and a Standard Poodle parent, will probably grow into a medium sized dog.
Here’s another puppy growth formula that you can use to predict your Bordoodle’s adult weight:
To conclude, Bordoodles are wonderful dogs with many great qualities. Thanks to their parent breeds, they’re highly intelligent, easy to train, very sociable and affectionate, and protective of their family members. A truly loyal companion!
