As many dog owners know, choosing the right dog food for your Doodle can be a daunting task. There are so many dog food brands to choose from! We went through dozens of threads in online forums and tallied up the top 12 most popular puppy and dog food brands that Doodle owners swear by. Let’s dig in (pun intended)!

Table of Contents

What Ingredients Make Up a Good, High Quality Dog Food?

As a general guideline, a high quality dog food should contain some kind of meat, grains, fruit and veggies. In other words, Doodles need enough protein, fats, and carbs.

The main proteins in most dog foods are chicken, beef, pork, and different types of fish. As carbohydrates, rice, wheat, oats, corn, barley, or rye are often used. Likewise, fat sources include beef fat, flaxseed, MCT, or fish oil. And of course, added vitamins and minerals.

The American Kennel Club has a great article on how to read a dog food label.

Also, look for products that have been formulated to meet the nutritional levels established by the AAFCO Dog Food Nutrient Profiles. This statement should be found on the dog food product label.

Furthermore, keep in mind that puppies or senior dogs should not eat the same food as adult Doodles. There’s a valid reason why brands have different foods for adults, seniors and puppies!

As they grow and develop, puppies need more energy and nutrients, which are all added to puppy foods. Around the time your puppy reaches adulthood and has grown to its full size, you can switch to your vet-approved adult dog food. In general, this occurs at around 1 year old, but it can be different based on the size of your dog.

How to Choose the Right Dog Food for Your Doodle

Not all dogs will benefit from exactly the same types of food. First and foremost, all dogs are different and some Doodles may have special requirements.

Dogs that have underlying medical conditions, are overweight or underweight, or Doodles with allergies – all may need special dog food. That’s why it’s always important to discuss your Doodle’s health and dietary needs with your vet.

Now, in addition to choosing the right dog food for your little companion, it’s also crucial to make sure your Doodle gets enough of it. Under or overfeeding your dog can drastically affect your Doodle’s life quality and lifespan.
