Yorkie Poos: Their Heritage
The fun-sized Yorkshire Terrier Poodle mix comes in all sorts of cute coat colors and patterns, some of them more common, and others extremely rare. But what determines a Yorkie Poo’s color in the first place? It’s their genetic makeup and what genes are more dominant.
Obviously, Yorkie Poo colors are all inherited from the Poodle and Yorkshire Terrier parents. By combining two different breeds, we get much more variety in terms of outcome. So, before we take a look at our list of Yorkie Poo colors, let’s first learn a bit more about their heritage.
Yorkshire Terrier Colors
Yorkshire Terriers are well-known for their signature coats, such as the black and tan combo, often fading into gray and tan over time. The AKC also recognizes black and gold, blue and gold, and parti, but they do come in other colors and color combinations as well. Some Yorkies also come in chocolate and brown coats, in lighter tones like golden, or in rich red, or black colors. By the way, darker colors in Yorkies often fade lighter as they grow out of puppyhood.
Poodle Colors
Just like the Yorkshire Terrier, Poodles can come in many different solid colors and cute patterns. More common are solid colors – brown, apricot, red, black, silver, gray, cream, white. Some Poodles also have patterned coats, such as black and tan, black and cream, brown and white, and many other combinations.

Black Yorkie Poo
Although many Yorkie Poos are born black, not all of them stay this way once they grow up. What’s more, an all black Yorkie Poo is even harder to find, as black Yorkie Poos usually come with lighter markings on their face and body. They look so cute though:
Black and White Yorkie Poo
Black and white Yorkie Poos often come in the parti pattern, which means that at least 50% of their body is covered in white. These pups may also come in other bi-color, parti, and tuxedo patterns, and also various contrasting color combinations.
Traditional Black and Tan / Blue and Tan Yorkie Poo
The traditional black and tan Yorkie Poo color is a nod to their Yorkshire Terrier heritage. And just like the Yorkshire Terrier parent, these pups are often born with black and tan coats, where the black coloring starts to fade into blue and silver tones as they start reaching adulthood.
White Yorkie Poo
A solid white Yorkie Poo is just the cutest thing to look at. A highly-coveted Yorkie Poo color, making any pup look like a fluffy little cloud. And even though off-white Yorkie Poo colors like cream or even silver are relatively easy to come across, solid white Yorkie Poos are much more rare.
By the way, light-colored Yorkie Poos, especially white coats, tend to stain easily, so be sure to remove any mud, dirt, eye boogers, and food bits from your pup’s fur.
Blue Yorkie Poo
A blue Yorkie Poo has bluish-gray hair, usually a steel blue color. Although it’s in the gray and silver tonal range, the blue is usually much deeper and richer compared to the other two. You may be able to find a solid blue Yorkie Poo, but oftentimes they come with lighter and darker markings on their body and face.
Gray Yorkie Poo
Gray Yorkie Poos look quite similar to blue pups, but when comparing them side by side you see that there’s much less of a blue hue and more of a true gray tone to their coats. Interestingly, most gray Yorkie Poos are actually born with black coats, which then fade lighter as they grow up. The same process often happens with blue coats as well.
Silver Yorkie Poo
The lightest in the gray tones is silver-colored Yorkie Poo. Like blue and gray Yorkie Poos, silver Yorkie Poos are often born with much darker fur compared to their adult coats. However, they can also be born with gray or silver coats to begin with. You never know what you’ll get with these pups!
Brown Yorkie Poo
A brown Yorkie Poo could range anywhere from a light brown coat, almost dark blonde, to a rich, dark chocolate color. Solid brown coats are quite rare, whereas brown Yorkie Poos with markings and patterns are more common. Our absolute favorite has got to be the brown and white Yorkie Poo color combination.
Chocolate Yorkie Poo
Chocolate Yorkie Poos are technically brown, but they’ve got that really rich, dark, distinctive chocolate coat color. Like all other brown coats, chocolate Yorkie Poos may come in different fun patterns as well. If you’re lucky enough, you’ll also be able to get your hands on a solid chocolate Yorkie Poo.
Red Yorkie Poo
Continuing on with warm tones, we have the red Yorkie Poo color – a stunning coat in a rich red tone. By the way, just like darker blacks and grays, brown and red tones can also fade into lighter colors. So, it’s not uncommon for a red Yorkie Poo to fade into apricot tones as they mature.
Apricot Yorkie Poo
Apricot Yorkie Poos look quite similar to red Yorkie Poos. But if you compare them side by side, you’ll notice how the apricot coloring is considerably lighter than the red. These pups may also have hints of darker and lighter markings in their coats, such as red, brown, and golden tones.
Cream Yorkie Poo
Although rather similar to white Yorkie Poos, cream Yorkie Poos have more of an off-white hue to their coats. It’s especially noticeable when comparing them next to each other. A cream Yorkie Poo can also come in lighter or darker tones. Some pups are more creamy white, whereas others are more tan.
Merle Yorkie Poo
One of the rarest and most sought-after Yorkie Poo colors is the merle Yorkie Poo. Technically, merle refers to a distinct pattern of similar tones of lighter and darker colors throughout the coat. Merle Yorkie Poos usually come with a solid base color with patches and spots of lighter and darker hues. Merle Yorkie Poos can come in different colors and tonal ranges, such as browns and creams, reds and apricots, or blue and gray tones.
Blue Merle Yorkie Poo
As you can guess, the gorgeous blue merle Yorkie Poo pattern has gray, blue, and silver tones with blacks and whites speckled throughout the coat. It’s absolutely gorgeous and very in-demand. So, don’t be surprised if you have to pay a little bit extra and wait a little bit longer for a blue merle Yorkie Poo.
Phantom Yorkie Poo
Another super rare Yorkie Poo color is the phantom Yorkie Poo. These pups usually have either bi-color or tricolor coats, with distinct markings above the eyes and on the muzzle, neck, legs, and paws. The base color is usually darker, whereas markings tend to be lighter. But just like with other darker Yorkie Poo colors, darker tones may fade lighter over time.
Does a Yorkie Poo’s Color Change?
Indeed, it’s quite common for a Yorkie Poo’s color to change over time. That’s because both Yorkshire Terriers and Poodles are known to fade lighter as they age. The fading, also known as clearing, usually starts around 6 months of age and can take months. If a Yorkie Poo puppy inherits the fading gene, it’s very likely that they’ll also grow into a much lighter coat as they reach adulthood.
The biggest difference is noticeable in pups that are born with black, brown, or red coats. A black coat could fade into gray or silver tones over time, whereas browns usually clear into warmer cream or silver beige tones.
Does Coat Color Affect Yorkie Poo’s Health and Behavior?
You may be wondering if there’s any difference between Yorkie Poo colors other than their looks. The truth is, coat color does not affect Yorkie Poo health or behavior in any way.
So, whether you’re considering a Yorkie Poo with a solid brown or black coat or a more unique pattern like merle or phantom, you can rest assured that your Yorkie Poo will be just as healthy and well-behaved as any other, provided that you’re taking good care of your pup and consistently dedicate time and energy for socialization and training.
One exception to this rule is the white Yorkie Poo. While white Yorkie Poos are just as healthy as their colored counterparts, they are more prone to sunburn and skin damage. As such, white Yorkie Poos should be kept out of direct sunlight whenever possible.
Secondly, the merle gene is linked to certain issues with vision and hearing, including blindness and deafness. However, this is usually easily preventable by DNA testing and responsible breeding practices, such as not breeding together two pups carrying the merle gene.
Which Color Yorkie Poo Should You Get?
If you’re considering adding a Yorkie Poo to your family, you may be wondering what color to choose. Yorkie Poos come in a range of colors, from the traditional black and tan to more unusual shades like blue merle or phantom.
Part of the decision may come down to personal preference, but there are also some practical considerations to keep in mind. For example, light-colored dogs may stain more easily, which will need some extra attention on your end. Light-colored dogs may be more prone to sun damage, so you’ll need to take extra care to provide them with shade and sunscreen when they’re outdoors.
Ultimately, the best color for your Yorkie Poo is the one that you feel most drawn to. With so many beautiful choices available, you’re sure to find the perfect match for your family.
Still, keep in mind that breeders cannot always guarantee specific coat colors, nor should it be your main priority. Above all, you should adopt a puppy whose personality and temperament fits well for your own personality and your lifestyle.
Yorkie Poo Colors: Final Thoughts
Thanks to their mixed breed heritage, Yorkie Poos can inherit so many different coat colors and patterns from both sides of their lineage. Choosing between all the possible options is definitely going to be a tough decision. But no matter what coat color you choose, you’re sure to fall in love with your Yorkie Poo all the same.
