Remember that matting and pelting isn’t just unsightly, it’s actually painful and itchy for your pup. With coat problems, skin issues will soon follow, too. In terms of the other benefits of daily brushing, it’s also a great way to minimize any shedding (especially for wavy and straight-coated Golden Cavadoodles), and keep the coat clean from dust and debris. Additionally, brushing will also make your Dood’s coat shiny and strong, as the brush helps distributes the natural skin oils all throughout the hair. 

So, even though ideally you’d brush your Golden Cavadoodle every day, it’s sometimes just not feasible. Or, perhaps you didn’t know this information before and only now discover the real reason why your dog’s coat is dull, full of knots and tangles, and overall just hard to manage. Can You Over-Brush A Golden Cavadoodle?

In terms of frequency, you can’t over-brush your Golden Cavadoodle. You can even brush your Dood multiple times a day, if that’s what you prefer. Just make sure that you’re not pulling on the hair when brushing it, especially when working on more stubborn knots. 

How To Brush A Golden Cavadoodle Properly? Step-By-Step Guide

1. Gather all of your grooming tools so everything’s right there in your reach: your pin or slicker brush, a stainless steel comb, and a dog detangling spray. 
2. As the very first step, run your fingers through all areas of the coat. If you feel any knots in the fur, work on each of them individually with your stainless steel comb. Fur behind the collar, around the paws, and the bum and tail area tends to get the most tangled. We recommend you spritz on some of that dog detangling spray to loosen up the tangles.

Tip 1: Hold the knot at the very root of the hair with one hand and use the comb in your other hand. This will take most of the pressure off so you won’t hurt your pup in the process. 

Tip 2: Always start combing/brushing from the tip of the hair and slowly move your way up towards the root, regardless if you’re using a brush or a comb. 

3. When you’ve detangled out the knots, you can start brushing with your slicker or pin brush. To make the coat smoother and easier to manage, spray on dog detangling spray beforehand. 

Tip 3: Start brushing from the areas that are the closest to the ground. First you’ll brush the paws and feet, then the legs, moving onto the chest and neck, and then belly, bum and the tail area. Then you’ll work on the sides and tail, and the very last step is brushing the hair on the back. 

4. For the face, we recommend using a comb to properly work through all of the fur. 
5. For the finishing touches, you can fluff up the hair with gentle upwards strokes. Either a brush or comb will work perfectly for this step.
