Step #1

Granted, this step can be a bit uncomfortable, even painful for your pooch. To prevent discomfort, we recommend you hold onto the mat with your other hand, super close to the root, whilst detangling them with your comb. This will take much of that pressure off the root of the hair. 

Step #2

Now that the worst mats are detangled, you can reach for your slicker or pin brush. For this step you can also use dog detangler spray to make the hair easier to manage. Simply spray it all over the coat, avoiding the eyes, nose, and mouth.

You should always start brushing the hair at the lowest point on the body. First, you’ll work on the paws, feet, and legs, then the chest, neck, and belly. Once these areas are done, you can detangle the hair on the sides, bum, and tail. And finally, brush the hair on the back. 

When detangling the hair on the face, you might want to consider getting a smaller dog brush or use a comb instead. Smaller grooming tools are much easier to maneuver around the face and muzzle.
