Best Brush For Cavapoochon: Intro

The Cavapoochon is a triple hybrid breed made up of the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, Bichon Frise, and Poodle. The Cavapoochon combines the best traits of its purebred parents. They’re sweet-natured, loving, and friendly little Doodle pups that make wonderful companions for singles, couples, and families alike. In addition to that, this tiny Dood also outshines many with its high levels of intelligence. There really is more to the Cavapoochon than meets the eye!

The main appeal of Poodle mixes, of course, is that they’re usually bred for their low-shedding and hypoallergenic coats. That being said, not all Cavapoochons are ‘hypoallergenic’ dogs. There are two reasons for that. Firstly, the Bichon Frise is actually a double coated breed, whereas the Cavalier and Poodle are single-coated breeds. The difference between these two coat types is that single-layered coats don’t come with a shedding undercoat. Fortunately, even the silky and straight-haired Cavalier and double-coated Bichon Frise are both relatively allergy-friendly as well.

To be fair, there aren’t any dogs that are completely hypoallergenic, because it’s actually the dog dander, saliva, and urine that trigger allergies in humans. Still, it’s the dog hair that catches most of those allergy-triggering particles. And once the hair sheds from the coat, all of those particles will start to trigger allergies.

Fortunately, ethical breeders usually strive to breed Cavapoochons to be as low-shedding as possible. For this reason, Cavapoochons are highly in-demand, as they usually shed very little, and they’re suitable for people suffering from allergies.

But the often overlooked part of adopting a Cavapoochon is their regular grooming and maintenance requirements. You may have even heard that Cavapoochons, like other Poodle mixes, are high-maintenance dogs. And that’s quite close to the truth, we must say!

So, we’ve established that Cavapoochons require a fair bit of maintenance and upkeep on your part. Regular brushing, bathing, and routine haircuts are all part of a Cavapoochon’s grooming regimen.

In fact, brushing is probably the most important activity in your pup’s grooming routine. That’s because like other Doodle breeds, Cavapoochons are prone to matting, which can easily be prevented with brushing. What’s more, brushing is also an excellent way to prevent shedding and thus any allergic reactions in you or in your family members.

But which dog brush should you choose for your precious Cavapoochon? For these Doods, the best options are either pin or slicker brushes, depending on your pup’s coat type. Let’s learn more about them…

Slicker Brush

If you’ve ever been to the dog brush department at your local pet store, you’ve probably seen all sorts of different slicker brushes in various shapes and sizes. A slicker brush is distinguishable by its wide paddle and ergonomic handle placement. It can come in various pin lengths and pin densities, handle lengths and designs, so on and so forth.

Slicker brushes are specifically designed for very dense and mat-prone coats like the Cavapoochon’s. As these brushes are quite heavy-duty, they’re perfect for both detangling the fur and deshedding it from loose dog hair. But that’s not to say that all slicker brushes can do their job equally well. It all boils down to the materials used in the construction of the brush. Likewise, its ease and comfort of use.

Pin Brush

Another excellent choice for Cavapoochons is the pin brush. To be more exact, pin brushes are better suited for Cavapoochons whose coats aren’t as prone to matting and require a more laid back approach to their grooming routines.

Pin brushes, like any other dog brush out there, come in different sizes, pin lengths and densities, and materials. A pin brush will look much like your usual hair brush that you’d use on yourself. But make no mistake, we strongly advise you to opt for a pin brush that’s specially designed for dogs.

Although pin brushes in general aren’t the best pick for very thick and textured coats that are prone to matting, for certain coat types a pin brush could be just the right fit. You can use a pin brush to detangle minor knots and tangles, remove loose dog hair from the coat, and any dirt and debris that gets stuck inside the fur throughout the day.

Metal Or Stainless Steel Comb

A dog brush isn’t the only grooming tool you’ll need. Regardless if you opt for a pin or slicker brush for your Cavapoochon, an integral tool in your Dood’s at-home grooming kit is a metal or stainless steel comb.

But why is that so necessary if you’ve already got a dog brush? With a stainless steel comb, you can work on those pesky knots and tangles that your brush simply won’t manage to get out. For precision work like combing through the fur on the face, ears, and even around the paws, a comb will be your best tool.

You should also pay close attention to the material of the comb. As we said, the best picks for Cavapoochons are combs that are made from extremely durable and sturdy materials. These include metal or stainless steel. As their hair is quite thick, a plastic comb might easily snap even on your first use.

What Is The Best Brush For Cavapoochon?

Now that we know which brushes are best suited for Cavapoochons, let’s get into the details. When choosing the best brush for your Cavapoochon pup, consider the following factors:

  • Your Cavapoochon’s coat type – are they single or double-coated? Does their hair tangle very easily?
  • Your Dood’s hair length – does your Cavapoochon sport a shorter or longer hairdo? Depending on their hair length, you might need either shorter or longer pins on the brush.
  • How is the brush made? What materials are used in the construction? This could make or break the whole deal, as some dog brushes are made from sub-par materials that are neither comfortable to use or that won’t manage thicker and more textured coats.

Best Brush For Cavapoochons Based On Their Coat Type

Because Cavapoochons are a triple hybrid cross combining the traits from the purebred Cavalier, Bichon Frise, and Poodle, there are quite a few different ways how these pups may turn out. It’s important we note that both the Poodle and Cavalier King Charles Spaniel are single-coated breeds, while the Bichon Frise has a double coat.

Moreover, they also come with very different coat types and textures – both the Poodle and Bichon Frise have dense, curly coats, whereas the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel has a silky smooth straight coat.

However, as the Cavapoochon is typically bred to achieve a low-shedding and allergy-friendly coat, these pups most commonly come in either wavy or curly coats. Still, some Cavapoochons may come with a lightly shedding undercoat.

The Difference Between Wavy And Curly Coats

When choosing the best brush for your Cavapoochon, their coat texture is one key thing to consider. Curly-haired Cavapoochons, especially those that have a single layer of fur, are the best option for you if you struggle with allergies. The curly coat traps in any loose dog hair, which means that it’s much less likely to shed and float around in your home.

The downside of curly coats is that these coats are also the most prone to matting. Their thick and textured curls not only trap in dead hair, but also any dirt and debris, and even food bits. And if all that gunk stays inside your pup’s coat, those pesky mats are soon to follow. For this reason, the best brush for Cavapoochons with curly coats would be something more heavy-duty, such as a slicker brush.

With the wavy coat, you might take a bit more relaxed approach, since they’re not nearly as demanding as the curly coat. As the hair isn’t as tightly curled, it won’t tangle as easily, either. On the other hand, if your wavy-coated Cavapoochon does have a double coat, you have to keep in mind that they might shed a tiny bit of hair from time to time.

Nonetheless, as wavy-coated Cavapoochons are generally easier to manage, you don’t have to necessarily opt for the most heavy-duty dog brush out there (although you can, if that’s what you prefer!). A pin brush would be an excellent choice for Cavapoochons with wavy coats, as these brushes are perfect for deshedding the fur as well as detangling it.

Best Brush For Cavapoochons: Reviews With Pros & Cons

Chris Christensen Big G Slicker Brush

Our absolute top pick for Cavapoochons is the Chris Christensen Big G Slicker Brush. For professional groomers and many Doodle lovers, this brush doesn’t need any introduction. It really is that good!

Chris Christensen Big G “Coral” Slicker Brush

The Big G comes in three different sizes: large, medium, and Baby G. For Cavapoochons, we recommend either the medium size or the Baby G option. The Baby G is also excellent for puppies, as it’s much smaller in size.

What we love about this brush is, well, everything! It’s made from high-quality and durable materials, and the curved, non-slip handle provides you with the perfect grip. The brush itself has a large paddle with densely packed and curved pins that can penetrate even the thickest of coats. Another perk is that you can quickly cover large areas on your pup’s body, and you won’t have to waste your precious time brushing through each section separately.

Pros

  • Specially designed for very dense coats like the Cavapoochon’s.
  • Perfect for both deshedding the fur and detangling any knots.
  • Features a wide paddle with curved pins to cover large areas of fur at once.
  • Extra long non-slip handle for your comfort and ease of use.
  • Available in three different sizes – large, medium, and the smallest Baby G.

Cons

  • Understandably, this brush isn’t the cheapest option out there. But we must say that as a one time investment it’s very much worth the price tag.

The verdict: The Chris Christensen Big G Slicker Brush is the best brush for Cavapoochons with curly coats that are prone to matting. For puppies, we recommend the Baby G version.

Chris Christensen Original Series Oval Pin Brush

If you’re more into those traditional pin brush type dog brushes, then you can’t go wrong with the Chris Christensen Original Series Oval Pin Brush. To be fair, this brush is more suited for Cavapoochons with wavy coats, as pin brushes in general aren’t designed for very dense and textured coats.

Whether you need to use it for deshedding or detangling your pup’s coat, or remove any dirt and debris after your Dood has romped around outside, this brush is an excellent tool for all that. This pin brush is very lightweight and comfortable to use, but make no mistake, the solid beechwood used in the construction is very durable.

What sets this pin brush apart from the rest are the pins – they’re quite long (but you can choose between three different lengths), and their rounded and polished tips glide through the fur so smoothly. In fact, our doggos love this brush so much that it’s like a massage therapy for them whilst we’re brushing their fur!

Pros

  • Very lightweight, yet sturdy and durable construction from highest quality materials.
  • Rounded and polished tips that glide through the fur very easily.
  • Great for minor knots and tangles, as well as deshedding the fur.
  • Available in three sizes and pin lengths – 20mm, 27mm, and 35mm.

Cons

  • Pin brushes aren’t as effective on very thick and textured curly coats.

The verdict: Chris Christensen’s Original Series Pin Brush is the best brush for Cavapoochons with wavy coats.

Andis Steel Greyhound Comb

To complement your brushing sessions, a metal or stainless steel comb is a necessity. Our favorite dog comb of all time is this Andis Steel Greyhound Comb. For such a small price, you get a comb that’s made from high-quality stainless steel that you can even pass down for generations to come.

This comb has two sides for your different grooming purposes – one with narrow set teeth and another side that’s wider. Whether you need to work on the worst knots and tangles, or simply groom your pup’s face and paws, you can do it all with this comb!

Tip: Give your Cavapoochon finishing touches with this comb once you’re done brushing them. Simply fluff up the fur with upwards motions and marvel at all the volume it creates!

Pros

  • Very durable and sturdy construction, making it a perfect tool to detangle the fur.
  • Excellent for those hard-to-reach and delicate areas.
  • Two different sides.

How Choosing The Correct Brush For Your Cavapoochon Can Help Prevent Matting?

Before we answer this question, we must understand what matted fur is exactly. To put it simply, mats are super tangled pieces of fur that develop if you don’t brush those tangles, loose dog hair, and debris out of your dog’s coat. In severe cases, a dog’s whole coat might be matted, and the only possible solution would be to shave the whole fur off.

Now, if you’re a doggy parent who takes their responsibility seriously, you won’t let things go that far. What you’ll do instead is that you’ll regularly brush out those knots and tangles to prevent those mats from forming in the first place. And obviously, you’ll need a good quality dog brush to do it effectively.

Consider Your Cavapoochon’s Coat Type

When choosing the best brush for your Cavapoochon, the dog brush you buy should be suitable for your dog’s coat type. If your pup has a curly coat and is quite prone to those annoying knots and tangles, we recommend you get something a bit more heavy-duty like a slicker brush. For wavy-coated Cavapoochons, a pin brush is an ideal choice.

How Long Is Your Cavapoochon’s Hair?

In addition to that, you’ve got to make sure that the pins on the brush are long enough to penetrate all layers of the fur to the very root. If you’re one of those people who like a longer, shaggier coat on their pup, then make sure your dog brush has longer pins. But if your pup feels more comfortable with a shorter haircut, you can just as well opt for a brush with shorter pins.

By the way, if you live in a very warm climate or simply don’t have the time or energy to deal with daily grooming activities, a shorter haircut on your Cavapoochon is likely the most reasonable choice.

Make Sure You Choose The Right Size

Furthermore, don’t forget to consider your dog’s size and stature. As Cavapoochons are quite small dogs, a huge, bulky dog brush won’t be the best pick. The brush should be appropriately sized in comparison to your dog’s body, so that it’s easy to maneuver around all those curves.

Don’t Forget To Look At The Materials And Construction

Finally, take some time to try different dog brushes at your local pet store and see which ones are more comfortable to use. Experiment with different handle placements and materials, as some brushes just aren’t that comfortable to use. Additionally, not all dog brushes are created equally. Some have pins that just won’t glide through the fur, whereas others are made from low-quality materials and tend to fall apart after a few grooming sessions.

How Often Do You Have To Groom A Cavapoochon?

How often you should brush your Cavapoochon depends again on a few different factors. For instance, how prone are they to knots and tangles? Do they have a shedding undercoat? How long is their fur? As we mentioned briefly, longer coats are usually a bit more demanding, whereas shorter coats might not need to be brushed as frequently.

But the general recommendation we have for all Cavapoochons is to brush them daily. This is especially beneficial for curly-coated Cavapoochons or for pups who have a double coat. Daily brushing is an excellent way to prevent any knots from forming into mats, and it’s also an excellent way to minimize shedding.

At the very least, try to brush your Cavapoochon 3-4 times a week if daily brushing sessions are a bit too much for you. Still, consider this – by brushing your dog’s coat daily, you’re also brushing out all that debris, dirt, and food bits that can get stuck inside the fur throughout the day. As a result, your Dood won’t get as dirty, and you won’t have to wash them as often, either!

But, as difficult it might be to admit it, we’re sometimes not the most disciplined with our grooming routines. If you do miss a couple of brushing sessions, or more, then there’s a handy technique that can get your Cavapoochon’s fur back into great condition – the line brushing method. This is a bit more time-consuming and “technical”, if you will, but it certainly gets the job done.

Can You Over-Brush A Cavapoochon?

We’ve all seen those horrible, matted coats on dogs, which is borderline animal cruelty. But what about the other end of the spectrum – can you over-brush your Cavapoochon? The good news is that no, you cannot brush your dog too much. As long as you’re using the right brush and the correct brushing technique, there really isn’t much to worry about. Brush your dog even three times a day if you’d like!

Still, there are some things to keep in mind here, since you can accidentally hurt or injure your dog if you’re not being careful enough. For starters, make sure that you’re applying just the right amount of pressure. Too much, and you can irritate or injure your dog’s delicate skin. Likewise, if you’re dealing with very stubborn tangles, you should never forcefully yank on the hair to brush them out. That’s a recipe for disaster!

How To Brush A Cavapoochon Properly?

In addition to choosing the right kind of dog brush for your Dood as well as using it on a regular basis, having the correct technique will be vital. Don’t worry though, there’s nothing difficult about it! Just a few simple steps to keep in mind. Let’s go over them…

Step #1

Gather all of your grooming tools, including your slicker or pin brush, a stainless steel comb, and a dog detangler spray. A dog detangling spray isn’t exactly mandatory, but it will make the process go faster.

Step #2

Run your hands through all of your pup’s fur and feel if there are any knots that require some extra attention. If you do find any, first work on each of them individually with your stainless steel comb. Spray on some dog detangler spray to loosen up the knots first.

When working on those tangled areas, hold onto them with your one hand and detangle them with your comb in the other hand. The goal is to take as much pressure off the root of the hair as possible, so that you’re not accidentally pulling too hard on the hair whilst detangling those knots.

Step #3

When you’ve managed to get rid of the most tangled pieces of fur, it’s time to jump in with your pin or slicker brush. Again, you can spray on dog detangler spray all over the coat so that the brush has an easier time gliding through the fur.

Helpful Tip: Whenever you’re working with your comb or brush, start brushing from the very tip of the hair and slowly move your way up toward the root.

When brushing your dog, start from the paws and feet, move your way toward the legs, belly, and neck. Then, you’ll move onto the bum and tail area, finally finishing with the back. Pay extra attention to areas that are the most prone to matting. These include the fur behind the collar and around the tail area.

For the face, we recommend you go in with your stainless steel comb again, as it’s easier to maneuver around those hard-to-reach and delicate areas.

Best Brush For Cavapoochons: FAQs

What Is The Best Brush For A Cavapoochon?

For Cavapoochons, we recommend either the Chris Christensen Big G Slicker Brush or the Chris Christensen Original Series Oval Brush. The former is the best pick for very dense and textured coats, such as the curly coat, whereas the latter is a better option if your pup has a more relaxed wave to their fur.

How Do You Make A Cavapoochon Fluffy?

If you’d like your Cavapoochon to have that signature fluffy Doodle coat, then regular grooming is an absolute must. Daily brushing, regular haircuts, and bathing as required are all key elements of keeping your pup’s coat healthy and luscious. What’s more, we also recommend you blow dry your Cavapoochon’s coat after giving them a wash, but make sure to use a very low, even cold setting to prevent any discomfort or pain for your pup. Lastly, you can use a dog brush or a comb to fluff up your Cavapoochon’s coat after you’ve finished brushing them.

How Do You Groom A Cavapoochon Puppy?

The instructions for grooming a Cavapoochon puppy are the same as grooming a full-grown Dood, but with one exception, of course. First of all, puppies are considerably smaller than full-grown dogs, so you might prefer using a smaller brush during puppyhood, such as the Baby G variation of the Big G Slicker Brush. Secondly, puppies have even more delicate skin, so you’ve got to be very gentle when brushing your precious little pal.

Best Brush For Cavapoochons: Final Thoughts

If you’ve made it to the end of this guide, you’re probably now equipped with everything you should know about choosing the best brush for your Cavapoochon. To sum it up, make sure to consider your Cavapoochon’s coat type and hair length, and don’t forget to use your brush regularly. If you have the right tools and set aside time each day to maintain your Dood’s beautiful coat, then you’ll never have to worry about matted fur again!
