But if you’re familiar with Doodle breeds, you probably also know that these dogs are not the easiest to take care of. Indeed, they’ve got wonderful personalities and they tend to excel in most areas, but they’re also quite high-maintenance when it comes to coat care. 

With that being said, one of the most important aspects of taking care of a Ttoodle is definitely their grooming regimen. Most importantly, you need a good brush that can effectively detangle and de-shed your pup’s thick, often mat-prone coat. 

So, which is the best brush for a Ttoodle? Here are two options we recommend for these adorable Doods… 

Slicker Brush

Slicker brushes are well-known and loved by Doodle owners and professional groomers alike. These dog grooming brushes are the most effective out there, making a slicker brush a great choice for a Ttoodle. It’s excellent for detangling and deshedding the coat, even the thickest and most textured of coats!

You’ll easily recognize a slicker brush by its wide paddle and the ergonomic handle. The wide paddle can have either shorter or longer pins, more tightly or more sparsely packed. But thanks to the wide paddle, it’s a great brush for grooming larger areas of the coat much quicker. Also, the ergonomic handle is preferred by many as it may take some of the excess pressure off of your hand. 

Pin Brush

In addition to a slicker brush, some Ttoodles may benefit from a pin brush instead. But keep in mind that pin brushes aren’t as effective as slicker brushes. So, we wouldn’t recommend one for curly-coated or super tangle-prone Ttoodles. But for wavy and straight-coated Ttoodles, a pin brush would be a suitable alternative. Pin brushes have a very familiar design with an oval-shaped head and a traditional hair brush handle placement. Of course, they come in all shapes and sizes, varying in materials and so forth. For Ttoodles, by far the most suitable pin brushes have stainless steel or metal pins. 

PS! Don’t opt for a pin brush with plastic or wooden pins, as they’re not effective on the thick and tangle-prone Ttoodle coat. Also, don’t confuse a pin brush with a bristle brush. They tend to have the same shape overall, but bristle brushes with actual bristles are not suitable for Ttoodles. 

Metal Or Stainless Steel Comb

So, how to choose the best brush for a Ttoodle? Before you make the purchase, there are a few things to take into consideration. These include your Ttoodle’s coat type, hair length, and how big your pooch is. You can buy the most expensive, most effective dog grooming brush out there, but if it’s not suitable for your dog’s coat type and hair length, it won’t matter much. 

A common issue we hear about from Doodle owners is that they brush their dogs regularly, but they still find horrible mats that sit close to the skin. This usually happens because the pins on the brush aren’t the right size. So, make sure to consider how long your Ttoodle’s hair is and choose a brush according to their hair length. It’s usually safer to opt for a brush with long pins, as it won’t be an issue for short-haired Doods. But if the pins on the brush are short and small, they won’t do much on long-haired Ttoodles. 

And although Ttoodles aren’t the biggest dogs out there, we recommend you take your pup’s size also into account. If you’ve got a very tiny Mini Ttoodle, it won’t make sense to buy the largest dog grooming brush you can find. And vice versa, for larger-sized Standard Ttoodles, a very small brush will just be a root of annoyance during those grooming sessions.

Now we all dream of a Doodle pup with a curly, non-shedding, and hypoallergenic coat. However, that’s not always the outcome. In fact, Ttoodles can inherit one of three coat types – curly, wavy, or straight. 

On one side of the equation we have the Poodle’s thick and textured curls. And, since Poodles have just one single layer of hair, they’re also considered hypoallergenic dogs. But on the other side of the equation we have the Tibetan Terrier with its long, fluffy, and shaggy double coat. So, as you can imagine, their Ttoodle offspring may fall on either end of the scale. 

Curly Coat

Like Poodles, curly-coated Ttoodles have tight, tangle-prone curls that come in many, many layers. The downside of the curly coat is that it’s the most prone to matting, and will therefore also require the most frequent grooming sessions. Straight Coat

On the opposite side we have the straight coat that’s mostly inherited from the purebred Tibetan Terrier. Ttoodles with straight hair are usually double-coated, which means that there might be some level of shedding that you should take into account. But if your straight-haired Ttoodle has longer hair, the shedding will likely be very minimal. Still, you’ve got to properly brush out the coat to remove any loose hair that can cause tangles and mats. For straight-coated Ttoodles, we recommend both slicker and pin brushes, depending on which you prefer more. 

Wavy Coat

Then we have Ttoodles with wavy coats – not exactly curly, but not completely straight-haired either. This coat type is probably the most common in Ttoodles and it’s also the easiest to take care of. It’s important we note that some wavy-coated Ttoodles have an undercoat, whereas others don’t. So, if your wavy-haired Ttoodle has a double coat, you’ve also got to remove loose hair to prevent shedding and minimize allergens. Slicker brushes are generally the best out of all the different dog grooming brushes. Simply because they’re the most effective and can deliver the results quickly. But if your Ttoodle has a wavy or straight coat that isn’t as textured and doesn’t get as easily tangled, you can opt for a pin brush. 

However, you should also pay attention to the pin size. As we mentioned earlier, this is especially important if your Ttoodle has long hair. If the pins don’t reach to the very root of the hair, the knots and mats will start to form at the deepest layers of the coat. 

Brushes with stainless steel pins are usually the best choice for Ttoodles. Stainless steel or metal pins are much more effective than any other material. These materials are also much more durable so that the brush won’t break under all of those thick layers of fur.

Keeping in mind that curly-coated Ttoodles are the most prone to matting, we absolutely recommend that these dogs are brushed every single day. But if you’ve got a wavy or straight-coated pup, you can brush them slightly less frequently, about 3-4 times a week. 

Still, keeping up with those daily brushing sessions is the best course of action for all Ttoodles. Not only will this greatly prevent matting, it’s also extremely helpful for minimizing shedding, which in turn is essential for anyone who’s struggling with dog allergies. If you brush your dog daily, you’re also getting rid of any loose dog hair that would otherwise fall out of the coat and start triggering allergies. 

What’s more, regular brushing also helps boost circulation, which in turn promotes healthy hair growth. You might be wondering – is there any specific way to brush a dog? Yes indeed there is. So, gather your pin or slicker brush, a metal comb, and also a dog detangling spray (this is a must for Doodles!), and follow along our step-by-step guide below. 

Step #1

First you’ll locate any knots and mats that require more attention by running your hands through your dog’s coat. The hair behind the collar and harness, around the groin area, behind the ears, and around the paw pads are the most prone to matting, so don’t forget to double check these spots. Once you’ve located those knots and mats, you’ll detangle each of them with a metal comb. 

Before you start detangling, spray on a little bit of dog detangling spray to loosen up the knots. Then, you’ll hold onto the knot with your left hand and detangle it with a comb in your right hand. Hold the knot very close to the root so that your dog isn’t as uncomfortable during this step. Always start detangling the hair from the tip of the hair and move your way up towards the root as the knot loosens up. And, of course, always brush or comb in the direction of hair growth.

Once you’ve detangled the biggest knots, you can start brushing your dog with your slicker or pin brush. Now you can spray dog detangling spray all over the coat so that the hair is softer and easier to brush through. Be very careful around your dog’s face so that you’re not getting any of the product in their eyes, nose, or mouth. 

When brushing your Ttoodle, you’ll first prioritize the lowest points on the body and move up as you go. So, first you should brush the paws, then feet and legs, then the chest and neck, belly, and bum area. Now you can move onto the sides and also brush the tail. Finally, brush the hair on the back. 

Don’t forget to also brush through the hair on the face. However, if it’s difficult to use a brush around those smaller areas, or if your dog doesn’t like having a brush around their face, use a comb for this step instead. 

Step #3

And now onto the finishing touches! If the hair on your Ttoodle’s body sits flat, you can gently lift up the root of the hair with a brush or comb. Gentle teasing motions will make the coat nice and fluffy again, guaranteed.
