Mini Doodle Dogs: Intro

Doodles have become all the hype in recent years. They’re cute, smart, fluffy, and as adorable as they can get. And what makes them especially great is that they’re often most suitable for people with dog allergies. Thanks to the Poodle genes, these pups tend to come in allergy-friendly, low to non-shedding, and hypoallergenic coats. No wonder everyone wants to get their hands on one!

With small Doodles, however, there’s the extra bonus of having more variety in terms of size. For instance, if you’d want to adopt a Golden Retriever, they all come in pretty much the same size. But, when adding a Poodle into the mix, we can achieve Doodles in all different shapes and sizes, giving us much more variability and options.

What Is A Mini Doodle?

So, let’s start from the beginning. Doodles are hybrid crossbreeds between the Poodle and another purebred dog, such as Golden Retriever, Cocker Spaniel, Bernese Mountain Dog, or almost anything else! Since Poodles come in three sizes – Standard, Miniature, and Toy Poodle – there’s much more variation in terms of what size of Doodles we can achieve.

A Mini Doodle dog is simply a Doodle that has a Miniature Poodle parent and another purebred parent. In addition to that, we can also achieve larger Standard Doodles when using a Standard Poodle in the mix. Or, a much smaller Toy Poodle when using the smallest Toy Poodle in the mix.

A Mini Doodle is in almost all ways the same as a Standard or Toy Doodle. Obviously, they are smaller than Standard Doodles and larger than Toy Doodles. For your reference, here’s a size chart comparing different Poodle sizes:

Toy PoodleMini PoodleStandard Poodle
Weight4-12 pounds10-20 pounds38-70 pounds
HeightUp to 10 inches10-15 inches24-27 inches
*A dog’s height is measured from the highest part of their shoulder blades, also known as withers.

The great thing about Mini Doodles is that they’re usually smaller than their Standard-sized counterparts. Of course, this also depends on the size of the other purebred parent used in the mix. Obviously, a Mini Goldendoodle will still be much bigger than a Mini Cockapoo.

That’s why we love Doodles so much – there’s a Doodle for almost anyone! Whether you live in an apartment or if you’ve got a huge house with a fenced backyard, you’ll definitely find a suitable Doodle pup for you and your family.

Why Get A Mini Doodle Pup?

So, why should you get a Mini Doodle pup? Here are some key things that make Mini Doodles great pets for various households.

Ideal For Apartments

Obviously, Mini Doodles are much better suited for people who live in apartments or smaller houses. Since Mini Doodle dogs are typically much smaller than their Standard-sized counterparts, they don’t require nearly as much space as larger Doods. After all, Standard Doodles may feel a bit too big for apartments, knocking over your precious vases and lamps by accident whenever they turn around.

In addition to that, Mini Doodles often also require less exercise, as they generally have a slightly smaller stamina than larger Doods. So, if you don’t have a huge fenced backyard, a Mini Doodle might be a better option for you.

Nevertheless, even Mini Doodle dogs need their daily walkies, jogs, and playtime. So, it’s still vital that you take your pup out for walks on a daily basis. After all, this is going to keep your pup healthy and happy for many years to come, and also prevent any undesired and destructive behaviors.

Perfect For All Types Of Families

Mini Doodles might also make better pets for families with small children. That’s because a large Standard Doodle may accidentally knock over your little toddler while being in the heat of the game. Mini Doodles are also easier to manage, as children may find it difficult to walk larger Doods on a leash.

On the other hand, Mini Doodles are typically more fragile than larger dogs. So, it’s still crucial you keep an eye on your pup’s and kids’ interactions to avoid any accidents and injuries. Of course, you’ll also want to teach your kids how to properly interact with dogs so that they won’t unknowingly hurt them during play.

Moreover, you might simply prefer a Mini Doodle if you’re after a smaller dog. This can also go for people who don’t have as much strength or stamina. That’s why Mini Doodles also make great pets for people with their own health conditions that limit their ability to keep their pup contained on a leash, or who can’t go on super strenuous jogs and walkies with a larger dog.

Hypoallergenic

Last, but not least, we cannot forget one of the main appeals of Doodles: their hypoallergenic coats! Although there’s no such thing as a 100% hypoallergenic dog, Doodles do come pretty close. Thanks to their Poodle lineage, they shed much less than most of their other purebred parents, making them excellent pets for people with allergies.

In addition to that, Mini Doodles may sometimes be even more allergy-friendly than Standard Doodles. That’s because sometimes breeders choose to produce Mini Doodles from backcross generations instead. Backcross generations have a higher percentage of Poodle in the lineage. As a result, their size, coat, and potential for shedding are more predictable as well. Generally, backcross Mini Doodles are very low to non-shedding, and the most suitable choice for people with allergies.

Mini Doodle vs Toy Doodle

As we briefly discussed earlier, Doodles can be created with either Standard, Miniature, or Toy Poodles, with Standards being the largest and Toy Poodles being the smallest of the bunch. If a Standard Poodle is used in the mix, we get a Standard Doodle, whereas with a Miniature Poodle we’ll create a Mini Doodle. Likewise, Toy Doodles are bred with a Toy Poodle parent.

In terms of size, Miniature Doodles are more similar to Toy Doodles. They’re both much smaller than Standards, and much more suited for apartment living (or if you’re simply into a smaller pup). The tiniest Toy Doodles are oftentimes also called Teacup Doodles due to their small size.

Whenever you’re trying to predict a Doodle puppy’s size, the parents’ size will be a great indicator of the puppy’s estimated adult size.

Miniature Poodles usually stand about 10 to 15 inches tall from the shoulder, whereas Toy Poodles are only up to 10 inches tall. Miniature Poodles are also slightly heavier, with an average weight of 10 to 20 pounds. Meanwhile, Toy Poodles can weigh as low as 4 pounds and up to 12 pounds.

Based on that, we can expect their Doodle offspring to fall into a similar size range, depending on the size of the other purebred parent used in the mix.

If you’re considering adopting either a Toy or Mini Doodle, it’s crucial you carefully do your due diligence and choose an ethical breeder that follows responsible breeding guidelines. For instance, reputable breeders generally do not cross together a large-sized purebred dog with a Toy Poodle for obvious reasons. Instead, they create Toy Doodles with another Toy or Mini Doodle parent.

So, if you’d like to know more about all the different types of Mini Doodle dogs, let’s take a look at the most popular Mini Doodle breeds and variations.

Mini Goldendoodle

The Golden Retriever-Poodle mix is probably one of the most popular, well-known Mini Doodle breeds out there. Since the Goldendoodle is already such an established crossbreed with a long history, they come in four distinctive sizes – Toy, Mini, Medium, and Standard.

The Mini Goldendoodle is the second smallest, and the Toy Goldendoodle the smallest of them all. Mini Goldendoodles usually weigh between 25 and 35 pounds, with an average height of 15 to 17 inches measured from the shoulder.

Mini Goldendoodles inherit the best of both worlds – they’re very affectionate, playful, intelligent, outgoing dogs that enjoy all sorts of activities. They make friends with everyone everywhere, and they make excellent companions for singles and families alike.

The Mini Goldendoodle comes in a variety of coat colors, such as apricot, chocolate, cream, champagne, or black. They generally inherit a low to non-shedding coat that’s soft and fluffy to touch.

Mini Bernedoodle

The Mini Bernedoodle is a smaller variation of the Bernese Mountain Dog-Poodle mix. The Standard Bernedoodle is called a gentle giant, and this Dood really does live up to its name. The Mini Bernedoodle isn’t that much different, either. However, they come in a much smaller package.

Mini Bernedoodles are much smaller than their Standard-sized counterparts, they are still quite big boys thanks to their Bernese Mountain Dog heritage. Mini Bernedoodles tend to weigh between 25 and 35 pounds, and they usually stand around 18 to 23 inches tall at the shoulder.

The Mini Bernedoodle is a calm, friendly, and loyal companion. These Doods make equally great family pets, but also excellent therapy and service dogs. The Mini Bernedoodle often comes in its signature tri-color coat pattern, a nod to its Bernese Mountain Dog Heritage.

Mini Cockapoo

If you’re choosing between small Doodle breeds, then the Mini Cockapoo may just be what you’ve been looking for. The Mini Cockapoo is a cross between the Cocker Spaniel and Miniature Poodle. Of course, Standard and Toy Poodles can also be used in the mix, resulting in either a smaller or larger Cockapoo.

The Mini Cockapoo usually weighs between 13 and 25 pounds, making them considerably smaller than Mini Goldendoodles or Mini Bernedoodles. Mini Cockapoos usually stand about 11 to 15 inches tall from the shoulder.

Although small, cute, and oh so loving, Cockapoos are quite energetic pups. They love meeting new people, and they love being at the center of attention. Like other Poodle mixes, Cockapoos shed very minimally, and they can come in a variety of coat types and coat colors, such as red, apricot, black, brown, cream, and many others.

Mini Labradoodle

The Mini Labradoodle probably needs no introduction. The Mini Labradoodle is a cross between the Labrador Retriever and Miniature Poodle. They were first created as hypoallergenic guide and service dogs back in the 1950s. Today, they’re extremely in demand as family companions, therapy, and service dogs.

Understandably, the Standard Labradoodle is quite a large dog requiring much space. Fortunately, the Mini Labradoodle is the perfect option for people who don’t have a house that big, or who just prefer a pup that’s slightly easier to manage on a leash.

The Mini Labradoodle can weigh anywhere from 15 to 30 pounds, with an average height of 13 to 17 inches. They’re highly intelligent and sweet-natured dogs that enjoy being around their humans above all else. Like other Mini Doodle dogs, they can inherit various coat types and colors from their parents.

Mini Aussiedoodle

The Mini Aussiedoodle is a cross between the highly energetic Australian Shepherd and Miniature Poodle. The Aussiedoodle has certainly inherited its Australian Shepherd’s work ethic, and they’re just as playful as the Poodle parent. They’re also very affectionate and confident little pups who tend to bond very well with their human parents.

Mini Aussiedoodles usually weigh between 15 and 30 pounds, and they’re usually 10 to 13 inches tall. Although Mini Aussiedoodles are certainly more suited for apartment living than their Standard-sized cousins, they’re still very active dogs who love to move and do all sorts of fun activities with you. Moreover, intelligent and active breeds like the Aussiedoodle can easily become bored, which can lead to bad behaviors.

Mini Aussiedoodles with red and blue merle coats are probably the most easily recognizable. However, they can also come in beautiful red, black and tan, sable, and parti coats.

Mini Sheepadoodle

The Mini Sheepadoodle is a cross between the Old English Sheepdog and Miniature Poodle. The Sheepadoodle is well-known for its shaggy coat that’s inherited from the Old English Sheepdog parent. But, they also greatly benefit from their Poodle lineage, meaning that they shed considerably less than their purebred Sheepdog parents.

As the Old English Sheepdog is such a large dog, the Mini Sheepadoodle isn’t as mini as some other Mini Doodle dogs, either. Mini Sheepadoodles usually weigh between 25 and 35 pounds, with an average height of 18 to 23 inches.

Owners often describe their Mini Sheepadoodles as silly and playful pups. At the same time, they’re also quite calm and mellow. And thanks to their highly intelligent parents, they’re generally easy to train as well.

Most commonly, Mini Sheepadoodles come in the signature black and white coats. But, as the Mini Sheepadoodle is a hybrid breed, they can still inherit a wide range of coat colors and patterns from both of their parent pups.

Mini Bordoodle

The Mini Bordoodle, also known as the Mini Colliepoo, is a hybrid cross between the Border Collie and Miniature Poodle. Did you know that the Border Collie is considered the world’s smartest breed? And, the Poodle is the world’s second smartest breed? That just says it all!

Although the Bordoodle isn’t as well-known as some other Doodle breeds on this list, they sure are becoming more and more popular thanks to their many amazing qualities. They’re loving and devoted companions perfect for active singles, couples, and families.

Mini Cavapoo

Another popular choice amongst people who adore small Doodles is the Mini Cavapoo. The Cavapoo, also known as the Cavoodle, is a cross between the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel and Poodle. The Cavapoo is a calm, loving, and friendly pup that enjoys snuggling up to its humans above all else. They’re very gentle, eager to please, and easily trainable dogs.

The Cavapoo is technically a Miniature Doodle in its own right. As the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel is quite a small breed, Cavapoos are almost always crossed with either Toy or Miniature Poodles. The Mini Cavapoo usually weighs between 13 and 25 pounds, with an average height of 12 to 16 inches.

Mini Doodle Dogs: Frequently Asked Questions

Do Mini Doodles Shed?

Like Standard Doodles, Mini Doodles are generally low to non-shedding dogs, making them perfect pets for people with allergies. However, Mini Doodles may even be more suitable allergies, if they’re bred as backcross generations like F1b, F1bb, F2b, and F2bb.

For example, an F1b Mini Doodle has a purebred Poodle parent and an F1/first-generation Doodle parent (50-50 mix of two parental breeds). This makes their genetic makeup roughly 75% Poodle, so there’s a higher chance of them inheriting non-shedding and hypoallergenic coats.

How Small Are Mini Doodles?

Small Doodles can range anywhere from 4 pounds and up to 35 pounds, depending on the size of their original purebred parent. For instance, a Mini Goldendoodle weighs between 25 and 35 pounds, whereas a Mini Cavapoo only weighs between 13 and 25 pounds. That’s a significant difference!

Which Doodle Breed Is The Smartest?

All Mini Doodle dogs are generally very intelligent dogs thanks to their Poodle heritage. After all, the Poodle is the world’s second smartest dog breed! The Bordoodle, however, might have a slight advantage compared to other Doodles. This is because the Bordoodle’s other purebred parent, the Border Collie, is considered to be the world’s number one smartest breed.

Like all Poodle mixes, Mini Doodles are certainly all the rage thanks to their small size, charming personalities, cute looks, and low-shedding coats. We hope you learned some interesting and helpful facts about Mini Doodles, so you can make an educated decision before bringing home your new puppy.
